Ed Swires-Hennessy was a member of the Government Statistical Service (GSS) of the United Kingdom for almost 40 years. He retired from full-time work in 2010. He has had a keen interest in electronic dissemination of statistics for over ten years.
These reviews were initially published as a monthly feature about statistics on the net in the GSS in-house magazine, STATus. Many new readers wanted to see previous reviews and so a website was created (www.surfingwithed.org.uk ); this carries all the reviews up to August 2010. From that date, new reviews are only published to the this blog.
In addition to the published reviews, Ed has carried out others, by request, for local, national and international organisations: all of the reviews are written from a user perspective.
- Ed was a consultant to the Project Board of the National Statistics website. He has lectured on the subject of web design emphasising the user perspective.
- He was the editor of the statistics part of the Welsh Assembly Government website – from its inception until March 2002. Since then he has advised various organisations on their website design from Department of Manpower in Singapore to the Food and Agriculture Organisation in Rome, from the National Statistical Office in Malawi to that in Hungary.
- Ed served on the Council of the Royal Statistical Society from June 2001 to December 2007. He was awarded the West Medal by the Society in 2003 for his contribution to dissemination, teaching – locally, nationally and internationally – and his Internet work. Ed re-joined the Council in 2011 as Hon Treasurer and Hon Officer for Membership.
